Dutifulness of Unbelief Parents

What is the Islamic rule on a woman, if she becomes Muslim and her father is not Muslim? Perhaps he tired for her for a certain period of time, and after that she became Muslim. How should the relationship be after that?

Thanks and may Allah bless you.

The answer:

If woman became Muslim. Although her father still not Muslim, she as his daughter has to be dutiful to him as her father. Unbelief does not cancel that right. As Allah said in (Luqman Surah) {verse 15}: “But if they strive to make thee join in worship with Me things of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not; yet bear them company in this life with justice (and consideration), and follow the way of those who turn to me (in love)”

To be dutiful and kind with your parent, you should have good relationship by visiting him and other things unless you have fear of some evil. As it is narrated in Sunnah:

Narrated Asma’ bint Abu Bakr:

My mother came to me during the lifetime of Allah’s Apostle and she was a pagan. I said to Allah’s Apostle (seeking his verdict), “My mother has come to me and she desires to receive a reward from me, shall I keep good relations with her?” The Prophet said, “Yes, keep good relation with her.”

All that proves that unbelief does not prevent from visiting parent and having good relationships with him. That might be a reason to make him convert to Islam.

And we point out that just as it is commanded to be righteous and kind to him, it is forbidden at the same time to be loyal to unbelief parent religion and to accept his falsehood. Being kindness with him is in clear matters. But loyalty is related to hidden matters.
