Allah sent Prophet Yunus (PBUH) to the people of Nineveh, urging them to abandon their sinful ways and also embrace monotheism. However, when they rejected his message, he left the city in frustration, without awaiting Allah’s command. Moreover, this led to a divine lesson that would unfold in the belly of the whale.
Surah As-Saffat (37:139):
“And indeed, Yunus was among the messengers. When he fled to the laden ship, he cast lots and was among the losers. Then the whale swallowed him while he was blameworthy. Had he not been of those who glorify Allah, he would have remained in its belly until the Day of Resurrection. But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill, and We caused a gourd tree to grow over him. And We sent him to a hundred thousand or more, and they believed, so We granted them enjoyment for a time.”
The story is also in Surah Al-Anbiya (21:87-88) and Surah Yunus (10:98).
As Prophet Yunus (PBUH) departed from his people, he boarded a ship. A violent storm arose, and the passengers decided to throw someone overboard to lighten the load. Allah chose him and upon throwing him into the sea, a great wall swallowed him.
From the belly of the whale and beyond, The prophet turned to Allah in sincere repentance. In addition, he recited a powerful supplication, known as Prophet Yunus’ dua:
“La ilaha illa Anta, Subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimin”
(“There is no deity but You, Glory be to You, indeed I have been among the wrongdoers.”)
The Quran doesn’t specify the exact duration, but various Islamic interpretations suggest that he was in the whale for three days or longer, emphasizing the significance of patience and trust in Allah’s mercy.
Allah accepted his repentance, and then the whale released him onto the shore. Weak and ill, Prophet Yunus (PBUH) was miraculously healed. Upon his return to Nineveh, he found that his people had accepted his message, demonstrating the power of faith and also divine forgiveness.
