How to repent in Islam

Make a strong intention never to return to the sin.

Shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the gravest sin in Islam, but repentance is still possible. Begin by sincerely rejecting all forms of Shirk and reaffirming your belief in Tawheed (the Oneness of Allah). In addition, say the Shahada (testimony of faith) with conviction, and ask Allah for forgiveness through Dua.

Recite this Dua for repentance: “Astaghfirullah wa Atubu Ilaih” (I seek forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance).
Another powerful Dua is: “Rabbana Zalamna Anfusana Wa In Lam Taghfir Lana Wa Tarhamna Lana Kunanna Min Al-Khasireen” (Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers).
