Islamic etiquette and manner
Islamic etiquette and manners, the Art of Manners in Daily Life, such as Politeness, hygiene, and kindness in Islam’s daily guidance, reflect the beauty of Islam as a complete way of life. Beyond rituals of prayer and fasting, Islam emphasises the importance of good character and also respectful behaviour in every interaction.
Islam does not limit itself to worship alone; it serves as a comprehensive guide for Muslims in every aspect of daily existence. In addition, one of its most beautiful features is the emphasis on Islamic etiquette, the art of manners, respect, and kindness that shape human interaction. From greeting others to maintaining hygiene, Islam teaches that good character is a form of worship and also a reflection of true faith.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“The most beloved of you to Allah are those who are best in character.”
(Sunan al-Tirmidhi)
This hadith highlights that practicing Islamic manners is not optional but a vital part of faith.
The Qur’an also reminds us:
Surah Aal-Imran (3:159):
“Indeed, Allah loves those who rely upon Him”
This verse reminds us that Allah loves those who place their full trust in Him, making efforts while leaving the results to His wisdom. This noble quality, known as “tawakkul”, is among the finest manners of a true Muslim.”
A list of good manners in Islam shows how etiquette applies to daily life:
Politeness is at the heart of Islamic etiquette. Moreover, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had a gentle speech and a soft nature. Moreover, a simple act, like smiling, is charity.
The Prophet PBUH said:
“Your smile for your brother is charity.”
(Jami` at-Tirmidhi)
This shows how small gestures can have great value in Islam.
Cleanliness is another pillar of good manners.
The Prophet said:
“Cleanliness is half of faith.”
(Sahih Muslim)
Personal hygiene, such as regular ablution (wudu), keeping clothes clean, and maintaining fresh breath, reflects spiritual purity and respect for others.
Kindness is a universal message of Islam. Besides, treating neighbors well, feeding the hungry, and being gentle with animals are all acts encouraged by the Prophet.
The Qur’an commands:
Surah An-Nisa (4:36):
“Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away…”
