Prophet Muhammed as a Great Model in Modesty

When Aishah was asked about the morals of the Prophet Muhammed, she answered: “The character of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was the Qur’an.” That’s why Prophet Muhammad is the greatest at all.

One of famous morals that the he has is modesty. Modesty means a person’s satisfaction with a status lower than what he deserves of his merit and his status. In spite of his great stature, he was the most distant of people from arrogance. He represented modesty in the Sirah in many examples:

  1. The Messenger did not like people to exaggerate in his praise. Umar narrated: I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, “Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians praised the son of Mary, for I am only a Slave. So, call me the Slave of Allah and His Apostle.”
  • The Messenger told his companions that he shepherded sheep when he was young, it is a form of modesty Abu Huraira narrated: The Prophet said, “Allah did not send any prophet but shepherded sheep.” His companions asked him, “Did you do the same?” The Prophet replied, “Yes, I used to shepherd the sheep of the people of Mecca for some Qirats.”
  • The Prophet -peace be upon him- was modest with his companions. He sit among his companions as one of them, until the stranger came and did not distinguish him from among them until he asked about him.
  •  The Messenger was helping his family in the household work. Al-Aswad narrated: That he asked `Aisha “What did the Prophet use to do in his house?” She replied, “He used to keep himself busy serving his family and when it was the time for prayer he would go for it.”
  • He was modest with his servant Anas. Anas ibn Malik narrated: “I served the Prophet (ﷺ) at Medina for ten years. I was a boy. Every work that I did was not according to the desire of my master, but he never said to me: Fie, nor did he say to me: Why did you do this? or Why did you not do this”
  • He was modest in his dealings with the disbelievers. That appeared in his situation with disbelievers after the Conquest of Makkah. He forgave them and said “He said: Have no fear this day! May Allah forgive you, and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy” {Yusuf.92} and he added “Go you are freelance”
