The word ‘miracle’ means happening of supernatural thing in the life to prove the rightness of prophets. Allah said in the Quran: ”We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth.[1402] But is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?” .In Quran, it is mentioned in Arabic Language as “Ayah” which is translated into “Sign”.
“سَلْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ كَمْ آتَيْنَاهُمْ مِنْ آيَةٍ بَيِّنَةٍ ۗ وَمَنْ يُبَدِّلْ نِعْمَةَ اللَّهِ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَتْهُ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ”
“Ask the Tribe of Israel how many clear (Signs) We have sent them. But if any one, after Allah’s favour has come to him, substitutes (something else), Allah is strict in punishment.”
There are two kinds of miracle. Firstly, one temporary kind like The Isra’ (Night Journey) and the Mi’raj (Ascension into the Heavens) of the Prophet, the Miracle of the Splitting Asunder of the Moon, The miracle of increasing food among companions of the Prophet and others… the second kind is the only permanent Miracle which is “the Holly Quran”
The Isra’ and The Mi’raj
The Isra is the night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem. The Mi’raj was the journey from the earth to seven heavens in which Allah obliged the five prayers.
The Isra and Mi’raj was a major miracle in which Allah let His Prophet Muhammad saw his great revelations. As for Israa, it refers to the wonderful journey from the Haram Mosque in Mecca to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem through Al- Buraq. In the other hand, Mi’raj was the heavenly journey from the earthly world to the world of heaven, where Sidra al-Muntaha, and then returning after that to Al-Masjid Al-Haram, and these two journeys happened in just one night before the Prophet’s migration to Medina.
The Isra Journey is mentioned in the Holly Koran:
“ Exalted[is He who took His Servant [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] by night from al-Masjid al-Ḥarām to al-Masjid al-Aqṣā, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing” Al Isra (1)
Also the Miraj is mentioned in the Koran:
“So will you dispute with him over what he saw?
And he certainly saw him in another descent. At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary. Near it is the Garden of Refuge [i.e., Paradise]. When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]. The sight [of the Prophet (ﷺ)] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]. He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.
The Miracle of the Splitting Asunder of the Moon
Al-Bukhari recorded that Ibn Abbas said, “The moon was split during the time of the Prophet.”
Al-Bukhari also recorded that Anas bin Malik said,
“The people of Makkah asked the Messenger of Allah to produce a miracle, and he showed them the splitting of the moon into two parts, until they saw (the mount of) Hira’ between them.”
After that great event Allah said for emphasizing that miracle “The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has been cleft asunder.” (Al-Qamar. 1)
Good thing to mention that the recent studies about the moon emphasize that there is some mark of split.
The miracle of Increasing the Food of Muhammed the Messenger
It happened many times that the very little food became sufficient for many and many people around the prophet.
Narrated Abu Hurairah:
That the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The food of two is sufficient for three, and the food of three is sufficient for four.”
In that Hadith you can believe that the food of two will be enough for three… But if we bring some little food which is sufficient for three people, will it be sufficient for large number of people?!
In the Battle of The Ditch Alkhandaq When the Prophet feed a thousand people from a small sheep and a little amount of barley. In addition, During the Battle of Tabuk, the Companions suffered from starving, so they sought permission from the Prophet – may God bless him and grant him peace – to slaughter their camels. Instead, the prophet asked them to bring him the rest of their food, then he appealed Allah to increase the food and invited them to eat, so they ate until they got satisfied.
Finally, the Great Permanent Miracle of Quran
Allah revealed the Holly Quran on his prophet who was uneducated man. The wondering was how could a man who didn’t know to write nor read nor did he compose a poet to compose this book! The miracle here, that book was full of inimitable nature, inimitable reciting, legislative miraculousness, and it had many aspects of the hidden inimitability, and scientific miraculousness, so no one could compose like that holly book… “Say, “If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur’an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants.” (Al-Isra. 88).
