The Seven Mortal Deadly Sins

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, “Avoid the seven great destructive sins.” The people enquire, “O Allah’s Apostle! What are they? “He said, “To join others in worship along with Allah, to practice sorcery, to kill the life which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause, (according to Islamic law), to eat up Riba (usury), to eat up an orphan’s wealth, to give back to the enemy and fleeing from the battlefield at the time of fighting, and to accuse, chaste women, who never even think of anything touching chastity and are good believers.

What are the seven deadly sins?

The seven mortal deadly sins are the great destructive sins which let its guilty go to hell.

Firstly, the greatest of them is polytheism, which is the destroyer which has no hope, if a person dies on it, then he has to go to the fire and stay forever.

“And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allah, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers.” (Az-Zumar, vs 65)

Secondly, the magic which is a kind of polytheism; because it is the worship of the jinn to get his help in causing harm to people. And the magician is the one who does what harms people through the jinn and worships them. Umar ibn al-Khaṭtab asked some princes of al Cham to kill the magicians because of their great evil.

Thirdly, the killing of souls which is one of the greatest crimes, but it is a major crime without polytheism. It is the same type of sins that are major, such as fornication, theft. “If a man kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell, to abide therein (For ever): And the wrath and the curse of Allah are upon him, and a dreadful penalty is prepared for him.” (An-Nisa, vs93). His punishment is Immortality in the hell if he considered killing as permissible, but if it is not permissible, then it is a temporary immortality that has an end. The immortality of the people of sins is a temporary immortality that has an end, but the immortality of the infidels has no end.

Fourthly, using riba (usury) is forbidden. “O you who have believed, fear Allah and give up what remains [due to you] of interest, if you should be believers. And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allah and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may have your principal – [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged.” (Al-Baqarra. Vs 278. Vs 279)

The Messenger of Allah – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – cursed the one who consumes usury, the one who pays it, the one who writes it, and his witnesses, and said: They are the same. (Narrated by Muslim)

Fifthly, taking the money of an orphan, whose father died when he was young not in puberty age, he is called an orphan. Because he is weak, the responsible person of him should protect him and keep his money.  The prophet (May peace be upon him) said: “I and the one who takes the responsibility of an orphan will be in Paradise thus” and he joined his middle finger and forefinger.

Sixthly, flee from war.  “O ye who believe! when ye meet the Unbelievers in hostile array, never turn your backs to them.” “If any do turn his back to them on such a day – unless it be in a stratagem of war, or to retreat to a troop (of his own)- he draws on himself the wrath of Allah, and his abode is Hell,- an evil refuge (indeed)!” (Al- Anfal. Vs 15, 16)

Except for escaping from the enemy as a way of deceiving or joining another group of the army and helping them fight.

Seventhly, slandering unaware chaste women. The one who slanders the believing women in adultery and he lies in this topic, he have to be flogged 80 times. “And those who launch a charge against chaste women, and produce not four witnesses (to support their allegations),- flog them with eighty stripes; and reject their evidence ever after: for such men are wicked transgressors” (An-Noor. Vs 4)
