Four ways to overcome sadness and depression

Sadness, despair, and depression are feelings that cause tiredness to the person. They may cause him poor concentration, lack of attention and lack of response. What is sadness and what causes it? We can say that sadness comes as a result of the lack of the required compatibility between two aspects such as the body and the soul, or a difference between the thoughts of a person and society or group, or perhaps because the desired goal has not been achieved.

How to stop feeling sad?

  •  Firstly, you should believe that whatever you lose, you still have a lot of uncountable blessings from Allah. So always be patient and praise God as this sadness is a tribulation to get more and more reward. “Be sure we shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere” {Al-Baqarah. Verse 155}
  •  Strengthen your relationship with God through a lot of supplication, remembrance and prayer. ” Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” {Ar- Rad. Verse 28}. Also you should know that the prophet supplicated frequently ‘Ya muqallibal-qulubi, thabbit qalbi ‘ala dinika (O Controller of the hearts make my heart steadfast in Your religion).” Another one, The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “If any Muslim is afflicted with distress and makes this supplication, then his supplication will be answered: O Allah, I am your servant, the son of your servant, the son of your maidservant. My forelock is in your hand, your command concerning me prevails, and your decision concerning me is just. I call upon you by every one of the beautiful names with which you have described yourself, or which you have revealed in your Book, or you have taught to any of your creatures, or which you have chosen to keep in the knowledge of the unseen with you, to make the Quran the delight of my soul, the light of my heart, and to remove my sadness and dispel my anxiety. The Prophet said, “If he says this, Allah will remove his affliction and replace it with joy and happiness.”
  • Try to occupy yourself with useful things to reduce free time, such as joining a gym, learning a craft, enrolling in educational or recreational courses, or looking for work. This will relieve the feelings of sadness that distract you from your life.
  • Do charitable works or provide benefits to people. And of course this does not require the availability of money. If he is not able to give charity with money, he may be able to provide benefit people with good words, congratulate them for their joys, and console them for their sorrows. But you should do this in a manner that does not violate the commands of God.
