Five habits in Eid al Fitr, Feast of Breaking the Fast

Eid Al-Fitr comes on the first of Shawwal after the end of Ramadan.. It is called in Arabic eid al fitr and the word ‘fitr’ means feasting which is the opposite of fasting. It represents a great joy for Muslims everywhere, so there are many habits Muslims are better to do in this special day.

  • Firstly, the fast breaking charity. Muslim is required to give charity ‘zakat al-fitr’ to poor people. Narrated Ibn `Umar:

Allah’s Apostle enjoined the payment of one Sa’ of dates or one Sa’ of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr on every Muslim slave or free, male or female, young or old, and he ordered that it be paid before the people went out to offer the `Id prayer. (One Sa’ = 3 Kilograms approx.)

  • Secondly, eating before going to the prayer.

Narrated Anas bin Malik:

Allah’s Apostle never proceeded (for the prayer) on the Day of `Id-ul-Fitr unless he had eaten some dates. Anas also narrated: The Prophet used to eat odd number of dates.

  • Thirdly, wearing the best clothes as the Prophet used to do.
  • Fourthly, saying Allah Akbar; Exclaiming God is great and Announcing God is great. The month of ‘Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.’ {Al- Baqarah. Verse 185}

It was narrated that

“The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say the Takbir between the two sermons and he used to say the Takbir a great deal in the sermon of ‘Eid.”

  • Fifthly and the last, congratulating each other. Companions of Mohammad ‘the Prophet’ were used to say “May Allah accept from you and us”.
